Merit-based scholarships for Nigerian students wanting to study in the UK

29 June 2012 - Kaplan International Colleges has launched a scholarship scheme for Nigerian students worth a total of £150,000.00.

The merit-based scholarships will be awarded to high-achieving Nigerian students accepted to study at Sheffield International College or Glasgow International College.  GBP 500 will be awarded for every A grade and GBP 300 for every B grade a student earns to a maximum number of 6 subjects.

Linda Cowan, Managing Director of Kaplan International Colleges, said: “‘We are delighted to be able to donate these scholarships for the first time in close collaboration with our top Country Partners – Preparation For Life, Chris Enuke and Associates, Dave Abion Consulting, NUBI Educational Counselling, SOARS Educational Services, Harvestfield Educational Services, CUPA study Abroad Ghana, in recognition of the high calibre of Nigerian students at KIC.”

Kaplan International Colleges provide a year of foundation study to prepare international students for entry to some of the UK’s top universities.  One of KIC’s successful students is Chineze Agbu from Lagos, who has completed her Foundation Certificate in Science and Engineering at Sheffield International College and has achieved a Progression Scholarship to study Mechanical Engineering at The University of Sheffield in September.

Chineze said: “Being on my own for the first time, I learned to be independent but still had the necessary support from the college staff. The student service was really helpful and always ready to assist with any questions I had. I was taught new educational and academic skills vital for my course at the university. I made a lot of new friends and got to interact with other international students from different parts of the world, thus gaining a global outlook to life.

“The city of Sheffield is also a very lovely place to study. There are a lot of students and there is an aura of solidarity that exists all around. There are a lot of nice places to visit during your leisure time and the green scenery of the city is perfect for taking walks or hiking. The city centre is really interesting during the holidays and there is always something to do.”

KIC runs five colleges in partnership with world renowned universities: University of Brighton, University of Glasgow, University of Liverpool, Nottingham Trent University, and The University of Sheffield. The colleges are located on the university campus and students successfully completing their programme of study at the required level are guaranteed a place on the university’s Bachelors or Masters programme. Kaplan’s international colleges in London and Bournemouth work with multiple university partners including Cranfield University, City University London and the University Westminster.
